Communist Party influence was particularly strong in areas supporting heavy industry. The coal mines of the Hunter Valley and the steel mills in Newcastle were heartlands for the Party and ASIO kept close track on them. Idustries regarded as strategic were particularly relevant and the intellgience organisation maintained close relations with business owners such as BHP. Workers operating imporatnt infrastructure such as blast furnaces were routinely checked by ASIO for any security threat they might pose.
